The Tweet Heard “Round the World” and Solving Food Insecurity One Meal at a Time

Speaker: Mark Bucher

Thinking of his late father and wondering how he would have fared under the COVID-19 lockdown, Mark Bucher thought of people his father’s age being unable to get food. Moved to take action, Mark used his social media channels to announce that his three Medium Rare restaurants would provide and deliver free meals to seniors in lock down. The immediate response to Mark’s announcement, “The Tweet Heard ‘Round the World,” was immense – and just kept growing. What started as a short-term response to the pandemic, Feed the Fridge now plays a major role in solving hunger by transforming “food insecurity” into “meal security.” It has placed refrigerators in “food deserts” around the DMV area and uses donated funds to pay local restaurants to fill each with up to 100 meals daily. Meals are available to anyone who’s hungry – no questions asked. In just 2 1/2 years, Feed the Fridge has delivered more than 700,000 free, nutritious meals and has pumped more than $2 million into the local economy.

Mark found his way into the restaurant industry almost accidentally. He was in the business of identifying potential sites for restaurants when, in 2007, he decided to start one of his own. Before co-founding Medium Rare in 2011, Mark owned a chain of burger restaurants, BGR: The Burger Joint. Prior to working in the restaurant industry, he pursued a commercial real estate career, specializing in retail. This led him to restaurant real estate, working for or representing retail heavyweights like Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Wolfgang Puck Restaurants, PF Chang’s, and Outback Steakhouse – just to name a few.
