Feldenkrais Method Awareness Through Movement
Thursdays 10:00-11:00 am
Feldenkrais Method Awareness Through Movement classes are explorations using movement and awareness to bring about change in how we hold ourselves and our gait, posture, activities and attitude. The classes are guided by verbal instruction in gentle variations of movements that become increasingly complex. This system to takes advantage of what is now known as “neuro-plasticity”, developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais from the 1940s through the early 1980s. He was convinced that the human brain was capable of learning and changing even into adulthood and old age. It was only proven in the 1990’s by neuroscientists that, in fact, the adult brain can lay down new neural pathways (known as neuroplasticity). The classes are about improving function and well-being in our day-to-day activities, which is why they are good for improving walking, running, sitting, standing, gardening, relieving pain, breathing, working, and playing. The classes are usually done on mats on the floor, sometimes lying, sometimes sitting, or even standing. Please wear comfortable loose or flexible clothing. This class is intended for DC Residents age 60 plus. Bring your own yoga mat.
Susanne Christov, is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She lives in Dupont Circle and teaches private and group Feldenkrais classes in Dupont Circle and in the Washington metropolitan area.
