Gulliver’s Troubles: America, Ukraine, and the Road Ahead
Speaker: Aaron David Miller
In the wake of the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, many believed America could never lead again. Putin’s brutal invasion of Ukraine demonstrated that the US could not only lead but inspire and encourage others to do so, too. Yet the road ahead for US leadership in the world is strewn with major challenges, including a dysfunctional and fiercely polarized political system at home and the emergence of powers large and small that challenge U.S. influence and threaten its interests abroad. For America, it’s a world to be smartly managed if possible, surely one not to be transformed.
Aaron David Miller is a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former State Department Middle East analyst and negotiator in Republican and Democratic Administrations. He is a CNN Global Affairs Analyst and the author of 5 books including his most recent, The End of Greatness: Why America Can’t Have (and Doesn’t Want) Another Great President.
