Missing History:  Slavery in Washington and Our Visual Memory

Speaker: Kitty Eisele

As one of the producers of Ken Burns’ celebrated "Civil War" documentary, Kitty Eisele looked at over a million images and accounts from the era. But images of the trade of humans in Washington and Alexandria and of Black Washingtonians, both enslaved and free, were nearly non-existent. So many Washingtonians don't imagine our city as a place that contributed to and furthered enslavement, nor do many of us picture those enslaved and free who had such impact as builders of this city. The real history of Black Washingtonians was rendered invisible, until recently.

Kitty will discuss the "missing history" of Washington, her discoveries researching the visual record, and how to think more imaginatively and critically about what stories our city tells and who gets to tell them.

Emmy Award-winning producer Kitty Eisele spent two decades at NPR, most recently as Supervising Senior Editor of “Morning Edition.” Her radio work has been recognized with DuPont, Peabody and James Beard awards. She began her career with Ken Burns, as one of the producers of his landmark series The Civil War, for PBS. A 2014-2015 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, she has contributed to books, plays, digital series and live audience events on American history, culture and politics, and her interviews and essays have appeared on NPR and in the Washington Post. Running through her work is the common denominator of sharing lives and shaping civic culture.
