It’s May and we’re going to celebrate (a bit late!) Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for Fifth of May. It’s a yearly celebration held on that day, which commemorates the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the French via the First Battle of Puebla.  However, the French defeated the Mexicans at the Second Battle of Puebla and the French were back in power. Following the end of the American Civil War in 1865, the United States began loaning money and guns to Mexican liberals, which helped push French and Mexican Conservatives to the edge of defeat.  In January 1866, Napoleon III announced that he would withdraw French troops from Mexico.

Today, Cinco de Mayo is more popular in the United States than Mexico and has become associated with the celebration of Mexican American culture. Commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades or battle reenactments. The city of Puebla marks the event with various festivals and reenactments of the Battle of Puebla.
