Frederick Douglass spent his life fighting for justice and equality. Born into slavery in 1818, he escaped as a young man and became a leading voice in the abolitionist movement. People everywhere still find inspiration today in his tireless struggle, brilliant words, and inclusive vision of humanity. Douglass's legacy is preserved at Cedar Hill in Anacostia.

Join us for a guided tour of the historic house where Frederick Douglass lived his last 17 years. There are also several acres of grounds around the house and a visitor center.

RSVP by clicking the button above, emailing Leslie, or calling the office.

Public Transportation: Anacostia on the Green line is the closest Metro station. From the station, Cedar Hill is a 3/4 mile walk, or a short ride on either the C15 or C31 bus.

Parking: There is a free parking lot near the visitor center at the bottom of the hill near the intersection of W and 15th Streets SE. Check in at the visitor center at the beginning of your visit.

Attendance: If you have signed up to attend and find you are no longer available, please email or call the office (202-935-6060) to let us know so we can offer your space to another person.

NNV Full Members: If you would like to request a ride, please mention that you need a ride when you register or call the office at (202) 935-6060 to request a ride at least three days in advance.

Accessibility: There are two buildings on the Cedar Hill site - the visitor center and the historic house.

  • The visitor center is near the parking lot, is wheelchair accessible and has bathrooms.
  • The historic house, where the main tour will take place, is a multi-level building on top of a large hill:
    • The main access from the visitor center is via a steep, paved ramp and stairs.
    • Access to the first floor of the historic house is accessible, although it has narrow doorways.
    • The second floor can only be reached by stairs; there is no elevator inside the house. Staff can provide a photo tour of the second floor for any visitors unable to reach it.

Please consider your personal mobility and the rigor of the trip before signing up.
