Edward Gero
A 50-year theatre veteran and a member of the Washington theatre community since 1983, Edward has received four Helen Hayes Awards and nineteen nominations. He is currently appearing as Jack Morris opposite John Kani in the American tour of Dr. John Kani’s Kunene and the King. Earlier this year, he appeared in The Lehman Trilogy at STC, the Guthrie, and Milwaukee Rep. He originated the role of Antonin Scalia in Molly Smith’s acclaimed production of John Strand’s The Originalist and toured with the production in 2017 and 2018 to Asolo Rep, the Pasadena Playhouse, and Court Theatre, and Off-Broadway to 59E59 Theaters in New York.
His stage credits include Mark Rothko in Robert Falls’ production of Red; Gloucester in Falls’ landmark production of King Lear, with Stacy Keach, hailed by the New York Times as one of 2006 top-ten productions in the United States; Richard Nixon in Nixon’s Nixon at Roundhouse Theater; Roy Cohn in Janos Szasz’ production of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches at Arena Stage; King Henry in Henry IV at STC; Donny in American Buffalo; and Sweeney in Sweeney Todd. His film and television work includes House of Cards, Turn: Washington’s Spies, Die Hard II, and Striking Distance, as well as narration for the Discovery Channel and PBS.
Edward received a Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship in 2015 and was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theater in 2024. In 2025, after a 33-year career at George Mason University, he retired and was named Professor Emeritus of Theater in the School of Theater, part of the university’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, he reunited with longtime friend Stacy Keach to create Patriarchs, a six-episode podcast radio drama chronicling the extraordinary relationship between Thomas Jefferson (Keach) and John Adams (Gero) through their own words. He plans to continue performing and to host an international retreat for artists at his ancestral home in the mountains of southern Italy.
